Ex-Governor Waititu hospitalised at KNH with high blood pressure complications

Former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu was on Friday, February 14 evening rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) after developing high blood pressure complications.

Waititu’s hospitalisation comes just a day after he was sentenced to 12 years imprisonment or pay a fine of KSh53.5 million following his conviction in the KSh588 million graft case.

According to The Standard, Waititu’s lawyer John Sakwa says his client has been admitted to KNH after his health deteriorated while in prison facility.

Following his sentencing, Waititu was incarcerated at the Industrial Area Prison.

During his sentencing on Thursday, Magistrate Thomas Nzyoki had declined to issue an immediate order for Waititu to be taken to hospital. He directed that any health issues should be addressed by the prison facility where Waititu began serving his sentence.

Waititu was charged alongside his wife Susan Ndung’u, who was also slapped with a one-year prison sentence or pay a fine of KSh500,000.

While the court convicted them on graft-related charges, Waititu was acquitted on three counts of money laundering.

Waititu’s co-accused, Testimony Enterprises Limited director Charles Chege, was sentenced to serve nine years in jail or pay a fine of KSh295 million.
