Former Spanish Football Federation President Luis Rubiales’s troubles continue as the 46-year-old was arrested by authorities in Madrid upon his arrival from the Dominican Republic.
The arrest is part of an ongoing investigation into corruption allegations. Rubiales is accused of receiving illegal commissions while negotiating a deal to host the Spanish Super Cup competition in Saudi Arabia during his tenure as federation boss.
Rubiales was apprehended and taken away in a black van accompanied by Civil Guards. Investigating officers have 72 hours to question Rubiales.
Before his arrest, the police had searched his home and the Spanish Football Federation’s offices.
If found guilty, Rubiales faces a two-year jail term.
The embattled Rubiales also faces another two-and-a-half-year jail term for a separate sexual assault case. He was accused of forcibly kissing Jenny Hermoso during the Women’s World Cup finals between Spain and England, where Spain emerged as champions.
The incident led to Rubiales’s resignation and subsequent prosecution.
Prosecutor Marta Durantez is charging the 46-year-old with one count of sexual assault and one of coercion for his alleged actions after the kiss.
These charges carry prison terms of one year and 18 months, respectively, under Spanish law.
Jenny Hermoso, the player who was kissed, has repeatedly stated since the incident that the kiss was unwelcome.
Rubiales, however, insists he did nothing wrong, claiming the kiss was out of excitement after the team’s World Cup victory.
Prosecutor Marta Durantez is now seeking €50,000 in damages for Hermoso and her family. She also requested a restraining order, barring Rubiales from coming within 200 meters of Hermoso and from communicating with her for the next seven-and-a-half years.
