Ex-Spanish FA boss Rubiales faces 2-year jail term for World Cup kiss scandal

The ghosts of the World Cup kiss still haunt former Spain Football Federation boss Luis Rubiales, as prosecutors in the country now seek a 2-year, 6-month jail sentence for forcefully kissing a female player during the Women’s World Cup against England.

The prosecutor, Marta Durantez, is charging Rubiales with one count of sexual assault and one of coercion for his alleged actions after the kiss.

These charges carry prison terms of one year and 18 months respectively under Spanish law.

Jenny Hermoso, the player who was kissed, has repeatedly indicated since the incident that the kiss was unwelcome.

Rubiales, however, insists he did nothing wrong, claiming the kiss was out of excitement after the team won the world cup.

Rubiales was caught on camera during the trophy presentation, clasping Hermoso’s head between his hands and kissing her on the lips.

This was not the only unwelcome behavior from the former Spanish FA boss during the Women’s World Cup.

He was also criticized for an awkward celebration where he grabbed his crotch while standing next to Spain’s Queen Letizia and her daughter, Princess Infanta Sofia.

Rubiales has appeared before court on multiple occasions after resigning from the FA position, denying any wrongdoing and terming it a witch hunt.

Prosecutor Marta Durantez is now seeking €50,000 in damages to Hermoso and her family. She also requested a restraining order barring Rubiales from coming within 200 meters of Hermoso and from communicating with her for the next seven-and-a-half years.

The scandal overshadowed a historic moment for Spain’s women’s team, which was celebrating its first-ever World Cup win at the time.
