EXCLUSIVE: Autopsy reveals what killed the late Jahmby Koikai’s dad

Daniel Koikai, the father of the late reggae MC and menstrual health advocate Jahmby Koikai, died of suicide.

According to an autopsy conducted on his body at Montezuma Monalisa Funeral Home in Mbagathi, Nairobi, Koikai died after sustaining a deep cut on his throat.

Pathologist Grace Midigo says Koikai died of excessive bleeding due to the stab wound on his neck.

Koikai, 65, died on Friday, June 14 morning, the same day his daughter Jahmby was to be laid to rest at Lang’ata Cemetery.

At around 9:15 am on the fateful day, the deceased is said to have sent a message to his daughter, Naserian Koikai. The message read, “AM SORRY IT HAD TO COME TO THIS”.

“This prompted her to visit him at his rented apartment at Tatu City Unity Block A5-11,” a police report seen by TV47 Digital reads in part.

Upon arrival, Naserian found the door locked from the inside. After knocking for a while, there was no response.

“The entry was gained through the bedroom window and the lifeless body of her father was found lying down in a pool of blood while holding a knife in his right hand,” the report adds.

Police removed the body — which had a slit on the throat — to Montezuma Funeral Home.

Daniel Koikai regrets

During Jahmby’s funeral, Koikai’s absence was conspicuous, with her uncle reading the eulogy.

This came after Koikai, during his daughter’s requiem mass, expressed regret about his relationship with his late daughter. He publicly asked for forgiveness for his shortcomings as a father and for being absent in her life.

“Dear Jahmby my daughter, the time has come for me to atone for my acts of omission or commission on your final journey from this world. It has been one of the most difficult episodes in my life, especially for your close family members – your mother, sister aunts, uncles and colleagues in the media and friends in and out of the country,” Koikai said.
