Man executed amid controversy over court evidence

Marcellus Williams, a black man was on Tuesday evening put to death despite questions about his guilt. There were many fabricated pieces of evidence against Williams inclining toward some cautious witnesses who had personal gains and a recent DNA examination also denies the involvement of Williams in the crime.

Williams’ execution was stayed in 2017 because DNA evidence that he contributed male DNA on the murder weapon was exculpatory.

Nevertheless, the governor of Missouri disbanded the board that was probing the subject; a new date for execution was scheduled. Williams has carried on struggling for his freedom with the assistance of legal institutions and the family of the victim insisting that he was framed.

They have called for his execution to be stopped, expressing concerns about racism during the jury-choosing process and the fabricated evidence that was used to prosecute him. Nonetheless, the US Supreme Court refused to stop his execution and today he will be put to death via lethal injection.

Williams’ charges

Before, the defendant Marcus Williams, was sentenced in 2001 for the murder of the former St. Louis Post-Dispatch reporter Felicia Gayle had gone through two prior attempts at execution. His first deal with the death penalty was in 2015 when the Missouri Supreme Court halted the execution allowing for additional appeals.

The special master was appointed to review complex DNA evidence that has recently come to light on the handle of the murder weapon – the knife in the shape of a butcher that was used to stab Gayle forty-three times and was left stuck in her throat.

The DNA testing thus formed the core of his defense, when the outcome did not incriminate Williams leading to reasonable doubt about the guilt. However, his case went on and the courts were split on whether that evidence would be enough to permanently stay his execution.
