Two police officers in Kapenguria, West Pokot County, recently received praises for using a motorcycle to transport the body of a man who had tragically drowned in a river to the mortuary.
In a remarkable display of dedication, the two officers from the local police station embarked on a challenging journey, where they rode their motorcycle for a distance of at least 3 kilometers with the body carefully secured, all to reach the location where they had packed their official vehicle.
So what happened?
Kiamakaeo Assistant Chief Michael Loreng reported to Kapenguria Police Station on May 9, 2024 that the body of unidentified adult male was floating on River Chesra.
The police team, upon receiving the report, drove nearly 80 kilometers to reach the scene, but could not access the exact site due to flooding and other environmental challenges.
The man around 60 years was swept downstream and stuck on a tree branch. Consequently, the police had to spend the night near the site since they could not proceed further.
“A night vigil was mounted and the body of unknown African male adult aged about 60 yrs was retrieved [on] 09/05/24 at 0940 hrs after the floods subsided,” a report filed at Kapenguria Police Station reads in part.
The body was eventually removed to Kapenguria County Referral Hospital mortuary awaiting identification and postmortem.
The officers earned the praise of National Police Service Spokesperson Dr Resla Onyango, who commended them for their dedication to serve Kenyans.
