The Football Association (FA) has confirmed that the 2024 Community Shield will take place on Saturday, August 10.
The fixture, widely acknowledged as the starting gun for the English football season, pits the winners of the Emirates FA Cup, Manchester United, against the reigning Premier League champions, Manchester City.
This means a repeat of last season’s FA Cup final, where United memorably overcame the Blues by two goals to one.
The upcoming game will be Manchester United’s third Community Shield meeting with City. United won both of the previous contests, in 1956 and 2011.
The Reds were last involved in the Community Shield eight years ago, in 2016, when goals from Jesse Lingard and Zlatan Ibrahimovic helped them overcome Leicester City.
City had earlier clinched an eighth Premier League title, and a sixth under Pep Guardiola, with a victory over West Ham United on the final day of the 2023-24 season.
Guardiola’s side became the only team in the history of English football to win four successive top-flight league championships. However, they have lost all three of their previous Community Shield appearances, including a penalty shootout defeat to Arsenal last year.
City last lifted the trophy in 2019 after beating Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool on penalties.
