Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon, the Netherlands’ Sifan Hassan, and the USA’s Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone have been nominated for the 2025 Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year Award, recognizing their outstanding performances in the 2024 sporting season.
Meanwhile, Swedish-American pole vaulter Mondo Duplantis has been nominated for the Laureus Sportsman of the Year Award.
Faith Kipyegon’s Historic Olympic Triumph
Kenyan middle-distance queen Faith Kipyegon made history at the Paris 2024 Olympics, winning her third consecutive 1500m Olympic title a feat never achieved before.
The 31-year-old also claimed Olympic silver in the 5000m and shattered her own world record, clocking 3:49.04 at the Paris Diamond League.
Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone & Sifan Hassan’s Olympic Feats
McLaughlin-Levrone delivered a world-record-breaking performance to retain her 400m hurdles Olympic title before anchoring Team USA’s 4x400m relay squad to another gold medal at the Stade de France.
Hassan created history by becoming the first female athlete to win three Olympic medals across the 5000m, 10,000m, and marathon. The Dutch star secured bronze in the 5000m and 10,000m, then stunned the world with gold in the marathon all within six days.
Mondo Duplantis Headlines Laureus Sportsman of the Year Nominees
Reigning Olympic champion Mondo Duplantis has been nominated for the Laureus Sportsman of the Year Award after successfully defending his pole vault Olympic title with a world record of 6.25m in Paris. He later extended the record to 6.27m.
Letsile Tebogo & Julien Alfred Eye Laureus Breakthrough of the Year Award
Letsile Tebogo became Botswana’s first-ever Olympic champion, winning 200m gold in 19.46 seconds, setting an African record and ranking fifth on the all-time list. He later added 4x400m relay silver for Botswana.
Julien Alfred stunned the athletics world by winning Olympic 100m gold in Paris before securing 200m silver.
25 Years of Laureus World Sports Awards
The 2025 Laureus World Sports Awards marks the 25th anniversary of the prestigious event, which celebrates the best athletes across all sports. Known as “The Athletes’ Awards”, the winners are voted on by the 69 sporting legends of the Laureus World Sports Academy.
The Paris Olympics was a defining moment in the 2024 sporting year, and it is fitting that two of its standout stars will compete for Laureus World Sportsman of the Year.
