Faith Kipyegon targets historic sub-4 minute mile in Paris on June 26

Decorated Kenya’s middle distance athlete Faith Kipyegon, will attempt to break the four-minute barrier in the women’s mile on June 26 in Paris.

The three-time Olympic 1500m champion and world record holder in the 1500m and 5000m events aims to become the first woman to achieve this milestone.

Kipyegon’s attempt will likely not be recognized as an official record due to the expected use of pacemakers and advanced athletic technology.

Her current official world record for the women’s mile stands at 4:07.64, set in 2023, meaning she needs to shave off more than seven seconds to reach her goal.

At 31, Kipyegon already boasts an impressive resume, including three World 1500m titles and a 5,000m World Championship gold.

Remarkably, she secured five of these gold medals after giving birth to her daughter in 2018, a factor she credits with transforming her mental fortitude.

Kipyegon’s endeavor echoes historic milestones in mile running, such as Roger Bannister becoming the first man to run a sub-four-minute mile in 1954.

While her attempt may not be officially record-eligible, Kipyegon hopes it will inspire women to “dream outside the box” and pursue ambitious goals.
