Faith Kipyegon achieved an exceptional feat at the 2023 World Athletics Championships, securing her second gold medal by winning the women’s 5000m final.

This victory follows her earlier win in the 1500m event during the same competition.

Kipyegon’s remarkable performance was marked by her clocking of 14:53.88 in the 5000m race, making her the first woman ever to achieve a double victory in both the 1500m and 5000m events.

At 29 years old, Kipyegon now holds two gold medals for Kenya in the championship.

Sifan Hassan, a familiar rival to Kipyegon, finished in second place with a time of 14 minutes and 54.11 seconds. Notably, Hassan had secured a bronze medal in the 1500m event.

Beatrice Chebet, known as the World Cross Country champion, clinched the bronze medal in the 5000m final with a timing of 14:54.33. Another Kenyan athlete, Margaret Chelimo, secured the fourth position.

Kipyegon’s accomplishments extended beyond this event. Just four days earlier, she became the first woman to secure a third 1500m gold, setting a new milestone.

During the 5000m final on Saturday, she engaged in a spirited battle with her Dutch counterpart Sifan Hassan, who is also the Olympic champion in the 5000m and 10,000m events.

Kipyegon’s triumph was evident as she crossed the finish line with a timing of 14:53.88, 23 hundredths of a second ahead of Hassan.

Throughout the season, Kipyegon had already broken world records in the 1500m, mile, and 5000m events.

Notably, this victory marked her return to the 5000m race after a six-year hiatus since 2015.

Looking ahead, Kipyegon has the potential to make history once again in the upcoming Olympics by becoming the first woman to secure gold medals in both the 1500m and 5000m events.
