Fallen South African football giants Kaizer Chiefs are desperate to secure the services of arguably Africa’s most decorated coach, Pitso Mosimane, as they aim to reclaim their past glory.
Kaizer Chiefs have been without a head coach since they sacked Molefi Ntsek in October 2023 following a poor start to the 2023/24 season, and they have been under interim manager Cavin Johnson for four months.
“Indeed, the club is looking at other coaches who can take over from Cavin Johnson, but Pitso (Mosimane) is at the top of that list,” reports Soccer Laduma.
AmaKhosi, as the team is affectionately known, boasts an impressive tally of 13 league titles and more than 22 club trophies – a record for South African clubs since the inception of the top-flight league in 1970.
Despite its rich history and commanding huge support, the club has failed to win any trophies since 2015, and they hope that Pitso, renowned for his trophy haul, can agree to take charge of AmaKhosi.
However, Kaizer Chiefs have received news that Saudi Pro League side Abha Club is seeking to recruit the 59-year-old, who coached another Saudi club, Al Ahli Jeddah, from September 2022 to June 2023. The South Africans, however, are not willing to give up without a fight.
“They have kept Pitso as the priority to eventually take over the coaching reins at Kaizer Chiefs. The reports of him being wanted again in Saudi Arabia could be disturbing,” Soccer Laduma added.
Who is Pitso Mosimane and why are Kaizer Chiefs desperate for his services?
Pitso Mosimane is widely regarded as one of Africa’s most successful football coaches. When he took over as SuperSport United’s interim head coach in 2001, he steered them from relegation danger to a second-place finish.

Mosimane’s coaching journey includes leading South Africa in the 2010 World Cup, winning domestic trophies in Egypt, South Africa, and Saudi Arabia, and clinching the CAF Champions League thrice.
In 2016, CAF honored him as Coach of the Year. Now, after a stint with Al Wahda in the UAE, the 59-year-old seeks a new challenge to further showcase his coaching prowess.
