The family of a man whose body was retrieved from River Yala on Tuesday, August 27, 2024, and went viral on social media has finally identified the remains at the Siaya County Referral Mortuary.
According to Joshua Oduor Otieno, a human rights activist from Haki Kwetu, the family from Nakuru County positively identified their relative’s body. The discovery was made by members of the public who promptly alerted the police.
With the assistance of a local diver, the body was recovered and taken to the Siaya County Referral Hospital Mortuary. Oduor recounted the process of retrieving the body and the initial difficulty in identifying it before transferring it to the mortuary.
The activist expressed concern over the recurring cases of bodies being dumped in the river without detection by security personnel. He urged the authorities to investigate why bodies are consistently found in the river and to take necessary action.
Oduor suspects there could be more bodies in the river, citing a recent incident where one was spotted and another was recovered and taken to the Yala Sub-County Mortuary. The police have since launched an investigation into the matter.
