Family takes legal action against hotel after son drowns in swimming pool

The family of Peter Kangethe and Eunice Wairimu of Kagio, Kirinyaga County are seeking justice after their son drowned in a swimming pool on New Year’s Day. 1 January 2024.

The family had gone together for the New Year’s celebration at the Silver Slopes Hotel in Kirinyaga where their son met his demise.

One of the hotel caretakers Mr. John Kiarie was accused and charged with negligence at the swimming pool at the Baricho Law Courts.

The family claimed that the incident wouldn’t have happened if the hotel had kept watching over their son.

The boy was a Grade 7 pupil at Rwang’ondu primary school in Mwea-West Sub-County and was to join Grade 8 this year.

Kiarie was released on a bond of Ksh 200,000 after he pleaded not guilty.

According to the father of the deceased, the unfortunate death of their son is still fresh in their mind.

“My wife Eunice Wairimu keeps on crying whenever she thinks about our son’s tragedy as they had gone together for New Year celebrations at the Silver Hotel when the incident happened,” Ngethe said.

“He died when we needed him the most, at one point the hotel management had said the body was not there but the body was retrieved at around 11 pm, the boy drowned at around 5 pm,” Ngethe told Citizen.
