Field Marshall Muthoni Kirima is dead, family confirms. Muthoni was a Mau Mau female top ranking fighter who fought alongside her husband Mutungi Gichuhi.
Nyeri governor Mutahi Kahiga says that she passed away following a short illness.
“I cannot fathom or believe that at 3.01am,I am still up because like they say in my community, a Mugumo tree has fallen,” wrote the governor in part on his social media platforms.
“I regret to announce to the world that we have today lost to death one of our most prominent MAU MAU heroes, The Field Marshal Muthoni Kirima has passed on.”
“The Field Marshal was rushed to Radiant hospital in Pangani but was pronounced dead on arrival.”
“The relatives reached out and we have organized that she be laid at Lee Funeral Home.”
“We send our heartfelt condolences to the family and pray to God for his grace. This is extremely painful , coming so soon after the hospitalisation of Miriam Muthoni Mathenge the wife of Gen. Mathenge Mirugi.”
“May God rest the soul of Field Marshall Muthoni Kirima in eternal peace and give quick healing to Miriam Muthoni Mathenge. The body of our Mau Mau hero rests at Lee Funeral home.”
Gachagua mourns
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has also mourned the freedom fighter.
“I have woken up to sad news of the passing on of Field Marshall Muthoni Kirima, the gallant freedom fighter who fought side by side with Field Marshall Dedan Kimathi Wachiuri in the Mt. Kenya and Aberdare forests to drive colonialists from our land.”
“I join her family and descendants of the Mau Mau war of Liberation in mourning the loss of our Mother Field Marshall Muthoni wa Kirima.”
“We recall with pride and sheer admiration, her exploits in leading the land and freedom army after the capture of freedom hero Dedan Kimathi whom she served as his personal assistant, after he was betrayed by Collaborators,” said the Deputy President.
“We remain indebted to these great heroes and heroines for the Sacrifice to liberate our land. May God Rest Her in Eternal peace and give strength to her family to bear the loss.”
