Football fans worldwide are reacting to FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s latest revelation that the 2026 FIFA World Cup will feature half-time shows, marking a historic first for the global tournament.
Speaking via Yahoo Sport, Infantino confirmed that FIFA will take over Times Square in New York City for the final weekend, during both the bronze final and the World Cup final.
FIFA’s Bold Move: A Super Bowl-Style Spectacle?
Infantino stated:
“I can confirm the first-ever half-time show at a FIFA World Cup final in New York-New Jersey, in association with Global Citizen. This will be a historic moment for the FIFA World Cup and a show befitting the biggest sporting event in the world.”
“We also spoke about how FIFA will take over Times Square for the final weekend, during both the bronze final match and the final. These will be two incredible matches, featuring some of the best players in the world, and what better way to celebrate them than in the historic Times Square in New York City.”
The move has drawn mixed reactions from football fans. While some welcome the entertainment aspect, others argue that it distracts players and wastes valuable match time. Critics also claim FIFA is trying to replicate the Super Bowl’s famous half-time show, which featured Kendrick Lamar and Serena Williams in its most recent edition.
