FIFA has decided to delay the inaugural Women’s Club World Cup to 2027, following concerns from stakeholders about the tournament’s readiness. The decision comes amid unresolved issues regarding the host, format, qualification criteria, and commercial deals.

Initial Plans

FIFA initially planned to host the 16-team tournament in January and February 2026. However, with less than a year remaining, key logistics remain unsettled. Clubs, confederations, leagues, and players’ unions urged FIFA to postpone the tournament to allow more preparation time.

Precursor Tournament

To maintain momentum, FIFA will introduce a smaller Women’s Club World Cup featuring four to six teams in 2026. This event will serve as a trial run for the larger competition, which will follow a four-year cycle.

Stakeholder Input

FIFA President Gianni Infantino proposed the Women’s Club World Cup in May 2023 to offer female players more global exposure. However, stakeholders advised a cautious approach to ensure the tournament’s long-term success.

The FIFA Council is expected to formalize the postponement during its next meeting. The decision reflects FIFA’s commitment to delivering a well-organized and sustainable competition.
