Five brothers arrested over KSh48.9 million graft scandal

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on Tuesday, February 27 morning arrested Kwale County Head of Treasury and his four brothers over alleged corruption.

Vincent Mbito and his four brothers working in various departments in the county government were arrested to face graft charges in relation to the KSh48.9 million graft scandal.

The Mbitos are said to be the directors/owners of two companies namely Chilongola Holdings and Rome Investments (k) Limited.

EACC says that the family has been using these companies to execute fraudulent deals with the Kwale County Government.

The suspects include; Vincent Chirima Mbito (County Head of Treasury), Mongo Mbito Mongo (County Revenue Officer), Hassan Shilingi Mbito (Driver, Kwale Water and Sewerage Company Limited), Mwaiwe Mongo Mbito (Kwale County Procurement Officer) and Chindoro Mongo Mbito (Ministry of Health – initially an Intern at Kwale County).

“The Mbitos have been escorted from Mombasa Central Police Station to the Mombasa Anti-Corruption Court to take plea,” EACC says.

The current charges relate to 10 contracts fraudulently awarded to Rome Investments and Chilongola Limited, “which were paid exaggerated amounts KSh44,919,341 and KSh4,007,943 respectively.”

The total money, EACC alleges, was distributed to the suspects.

“The tenders, which they obtained in violation of procurement laws using forged documents, were for the supply and delivery of sanitation materials, food and ration, general office supplies, and institutional appliances,” EACC adds.
