Five people have been confirmed dead and several others injured after a reported land dispute in Angata Barrikoi area, Narok County, turned violent.
The violence erupted on Monday, April 28 after local residents, claiming historical ownership of the 6,300-acre land, blocked the main road to prevent land officials from surveying the area.
The protests would later escalate into a full blown clash between the locals and police officers, leading to injuries on both sides.
Officer in charge of Angata Barrikoi Health Centre, Joel Langat, told journalists that four people were brought in dead while one succumbed while undergoing treatment. All victims had sustained gunshot wounds.
In the ensuing melee, a vehicle belonging to the land officials was damaged after a targeted attack by the locals.
Local leaders, including elders, have stepped in to mediate, urging both the community and authorities to avoid further violence and engage in peaceful dialogue to resolve the land dispute. Efforts are also underway to support the families of the deceased and injured.
An independent investigation into the incident is being called for, as the community hopes for a peaceful resolution to the longstanding land issue.
