FKF Elections : Hussein Mohammed elected FKF President in historic runoff election

Murang’a Seals Vice Chairperson Hussein Mohammed and former Kenyan international McDonald Mariga have been elected as the new Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President and Vice President, respectively. The duo garnered 67 votes in the recently concluded FKF National elections.

Presidential Election: A Tight Race Leading to a Runoff

The FKF presidential election went into a runoff after none of the candidates achieved the required threshold of 50%+1 of the total votes to be declared the outright winner in the first round.

In the first round of the vote Hussein Managed 42 votes followed by the current FKF Vice Chairperson Doris Petra who ganered 31 vote in third place was former FKF CEO Barry Otieno who got 10 votes and Kakamega Homeboyz Chairman Cleophas Shimanyula managed four votes, Sammy ‘Kempes’ Owino two, Tom Alila one, while Sam Ocholla and Chris Amimo had none.

Before the runoff vote commenced, Barry Otieno also conceded after consultations with Team Hussein. This left Hussein Mohammed unopposed, as any votes cast for the conceded candidates would be considered spoilt ballots.

In the final tally:

  • Hussein Mohammed: 67 votes
  • Doris Petra: 1 vote
  • Barry Otieno: 1 vote

FIFA and CAF Representatives Witness Historic Transition

The election was graced by FIFA Council Member Isha Johansen, who delivered messages from FIFA President Gianni Infantino and CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe. Both leaders acknowledged the importance of the elections and emphasized their significance for Kenyan football’s development.

A New Era for FKF Leadership

Hussein Mohammed’s victory marks the end of Nick Mwendwa’s nine-year tenure as FKF President, which began in February 2016 when he succeeded former president Sam Nyamweya. The new leadership promises to usher in a new chapter for Kenyan football, focusing on transparency, inclusivity, and growth.
