The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Leagues and Competitions Committee (LCC) has launched investigations into two separate incidents of match official harassment and physical assault reported during the weekend fixtures of the National Super League (NSL) and Division One League.
The incidents occurred on Sunday, January 12, 2025, during the following matches:
- 3K FC vs Kibera Blackstars FC at Moi Stadium, Embu
- Compel FC vs GFE 105 FC at Ilala Stadium, Webuye
Details of the Incidents
Incident 1: Moi Stadium, Embu
A viral video on social media shows match officials being attacked by unidentified individuals after 3K FC lost by a solitary goal to Kibera Blackstars FC. The violence was allegedly sparked by the disallowance of three goals scored by the home team.
Incident 2: Ilala Stadium, Webuye
In Webuye, chaos erupted during the match between Compel FC and GFE 105 FC, where fans accused the referee of bias. The situation escalated to fans chasing after the match officials, creating scenes of unrest.
LCC’s Response
The LCC has received comprehensive match reports on both incidents and is actively working with the respective clubs to uncover the facts. The committee, in conjunction with FKF’s Leagues and Competitions Manager, has scheduled a meeting on Thursday, January 16, 2025, to deliberate on the findings.
Following this meeting, a detailed statement will be released, outlining the Federation’s actions.
“As a Federation, we reiterate our commitment to ensuring the safety and security of match officials while promoting the highest standards of sportsmanship and integrity in the game. Violence or intimidation against match officials is unacceptable and will be addressed decisively.” – LCC Chairman Peter “Kass Kass” Kamau
FKF’s Stand Against Violence
The FKF has strongly condemned the incidents and vowed to take stern action against those responsible for the harassment and assault of match officials.
“The safety of match officials is paramount, and the FKF will not tolerate any form of violence or misconduct. We remain dedicated to fostering a respectful and professional environment in Kenyan football.”
Next Steps
The FKF has called on all stakeholders, including clubs and fans, to uphold the principles of fair play and respect in football. Clubs involved in the incidents may face sanctions if found culpable, including fines, suspensions, or other penalties as stipulated in FKF regulations.
