The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has announced the appointment of Francis Kimanzi as the new Football Development Director, marking a significant move in the federation’s efforts to enhance football structures and nurture talent in the country.
Kimanzi’s Journey to the New Role
Kimanzi, an experienced tactician with deep roots in Kenyan football, recently served as the interim head coach of the national team, Harambee Stars. He took over after the departure of Turkish coach Engin Firat and later handed over the reins to newly appointed South African coach, Benni McCarthy.
During his brief tenure, Kimanzi led Harambee Stars to a commendable performance at the Mapinduzi Cup in Zanzibar this January. Under his guidance, the national team defeated Tanzania Mainland 2-0,drew 1-1 with Burkina Faso and Lost to Zanzibar
This was Kimanzi’s third stint as Harambee Stars’ head coach, having previously held the position in 2008-09 and 2011-12. Notably, under his leadership in 2008, Kenya achieved its highest-ever FIFA world ranking (68th).
FKF’s Vision for Football Development
FKF General Secretary Harold Ndege expressed confidence in Kimanzi’s ability to steer football development in the country.
“We are confident that Mr. Kimanzi’s leadership and expertise will play a pivotal role in advancing our development agenda and shaping the future of Kenyan football,” Ndege said.
“As we seek to strengthen our structures, nurture local talent, and foster sustainable growth, his experience will be invaluable.”
A Storied Coaching Career
Apart from his exploits with the national team, Kimanzi has had an illustrious coaching career in club football. He led Mathare United to their first-ever Kenya Premier League (KPL) title in 2008, a historic achievement for the club where he started his football journey.
