Football player raising his 5 siblings after mother’s death

Armorion Smith, a 21-year-old defensive back at Michigan State has had to become a parent to his siblings.

Just a month after losing his mother, Gala Gilliam, to breast cancer, Smith found himself as the head of his household, caring for his five younger siblings while juggling college and football.

Without a father in the picture, Smith became the legal guardian of his siblings on September 11.

His days are now filled with classes, football practices, and the daily duties of running a household. Despite the challenges, Smith remains determined.

“My cards were given to me,” he said, reflecting on his new reality. “I didn’t choose my deck of cards.”

His 19-year-old sister, Aleion, helps run the house while he’s away for 12-hour days.

Smith, grateful for her support, hopes she can start taking college classes soon.

He is focused on keeping his family happy, healthy, and safe—a responsibility that leaves his teammates in awe.

“I couldn’t imagine being in his situation,” said linebacker Jordan Hall.

“He’s one of the strongest guys I’ve ever known.”

Smith’s journey has been anything but easy.

Growing up in Detroit, he experienced periods of homelessness, moving from house to house.

He earned a football scholarship to the University of Cincinnati but transferred to Michigan State after his mother’s cancer diagnosis to be closer to home.

She tried to prepare him for the hardships ahead before passing away at just 41.

Now, Smith manages his days through notes on his phone, ensuring his siblings are awake and ready for school before heading to campus for football meetings and therapy sessions.

His eldest sister takes care of their younger brothers and toddler sister while Smith is away.

They make do with what they have, relying on financial support from a GoFundMe campaign that has raised over $60,000.

Despite the hardships, Smith feels the love and support from Spartan Nation.

“It’s been a rough time, but the love and support have taken some stress off my shoulders,” he said.

“I can feel my mom living through me, almost like I hear her voice telling me how proud she is of me.”

Through it all, Smith remains focused, determined to carry on for the sake of his family.
