Former Bumula MP Lawrence Sifuna dies aged 77 years

Former Bumula member of parliament (MP) Lawrence Sifuna has died while undergoing treatment at an Eldoret Hospital, the family has confirmed.

Sifuna, who served as the first Bumula constituency MP died on Saturday December 2, at the age of 77 years.

He was first elected to parliament in 1979 in the then larger Bungoma South constituency. Sifuna was re-elected in the 1983 general elections. 

“Hon. Sifuna is best remembered as one of the most courageous Members of Parliament in the 1980s.

“For his courage and non-compromising stance, Moi’s Attorney General and Kanu apologist Charles Njonjo in 1981, named him among the seven MPs that always gave Moi nightmares,” read part of a family statement.

Besides politics, Sifuna was a professional registered accountant in Kenya. 

He was a Fellow of Chartered Accountants (FCA) and a Fellow of the Association of International Accountants (FAIA).

“We mourn the loss of a visionary leader whose impact will resonate for generations,” the family noted.

Meanwhile, Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Raila Odinga was among the leaders who mourned the death of the former Bumula MP.

In a press statement, Raila termed the late Sifuna as a key figure in the second liberation and defender of the people.

“Deeply saddened by the passing of Hon. Lawrence Simiyu Sifuna, a former MP, key figure in the second liberation, defender of the people, and a life member of ODM.

“My condolences to the Sifuna family, Party SG Edwin Sifuna, the people of Kanduyi, and the entire nation,” Raila noted in a statement posted on his X account.

At the same time, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, who is also a relative to the late Bumula MP, noted that his death was a great loss to the family.
