Former FIFA Boss Criticises decision to hold World Cup in six countries

Former FIFA president Sepp Blatter has slammed the decision by the world football governing to have the 2030 World Cup hosted by six nations.

Earlier this week FIFA announced that the global showpiece will be held across three continents with Morocco representing the African continent.

FIFA made the surprise announcement on Wednesday, naming Morocco, Spain, and Portugal as the hosts for the 2030 tournament.

Additionally, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the tournament, Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay will host the opening matches.

However, Sepp Blatter, who served as FIFA President from 1998 to 2015 and was compelled to step down following a corruption probe, thinks that the decision degrades the Tournament’s heritage.

Blatter, in the last edition, made his thoughts heard when he criticised FIFA’s decision to grant the 2022 tournament to Qatar, citing concerns about the Middle Eastern nation’s size.

“It is absurd to tear the tournament apart in this way, the World Cup finals must be a compact event,” the 87-year-old said.

Since the World Cup will be a century old in 2030 Blatter Believes that the 2030 edition should be held in Uruguay for historic reasons as it was the nation that hosted the inaugural tournament.

“For historical reasons, the 2030 World Cup should have belonged exclusively in South America” He added.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino announced that the Council had decided the first game of the tournament would be in the same stadium where it all started. This decision is a way to bring the world together.

The tournament has always been held in one place, on one continent.

South Africa was the first African country to host the World Cup.

Morocco wanted to host the tournament by itself in 1994, 1998, 2006, and 2010. They also tried for 2026, but the United States, Canada, and Mexico won that bid.
