Nyeri’s third Governor Wahome Gakuru’s security aide Josephat Maina alias Baba Maina has revealed that the former county head and his wife Catherine Kirumba had seperated.
“The two lived separately only appearing together at public events,” divulged Baba Maina who additionally added that he had a girlfriend who lived in Hurlingham.
The former county boss was intended to travel to Nairobi from Nyeri on the eve of his demise, but he changed his mind last minute.
“Dr Gakuru told me that he was not comfortable staying the night in Nairobi as there was tension between him and his girlfriend Wangui, who lived in Hurlingham. They had been having issues for about a month,” added Maina.
Former governor Gakuru succumbed to a road accident along Kenol- Thika dual carriageway in November 7, 2017.
The wife, Catherine Kirumba eulogised him as a dotting father and provider. “I have known daktari for half my life and we were married for the past 21 years,” she told congregants at her husband’s burial service.
“There is so much I can say about this man but I choose to say but a few, I knew Wahome as a lateral thinker, diligent, resilient, not possible was not something he believed in, can’t be done wasn’t something he believed in.”
“Your Excellency, William Ruto, you will be glad to know he was a hustler just like you and he ensured we were provided for, that I and the boys lacked nothing,” she said amidst laughter from the congregation.
Fingers were pointed at her for planning her husband’s death, claims she refuted during the public inquest into Gakuru’s death in Nyeri Law Courts on October 3, 2019.
“I had not been separated from him or living separately. We were living like a husband and wife, with secondary differences normal in any family,” she told court.
Seven years later since the demise of the governor, no one has been charged for his death. Martin Nyaguto, Homicide Unit head at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations says they will arrest Samuel Kinyanjui who was his driver.
