Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has pledged KSh2 million in personal donations to Kenya Red Cross Society who are at the frontline in helping flood victims.
In a statement on Tuesday, April 30, Kenyatta expressed empathy towards all affected Kenyans.
“The relentless rainfall has caused significant damage, displacing families, destroying infrastructure, and claiming precious lives. During this time of profound loss and despair, my thoughts and prayers are with the affected communities as they cope with the aftermath of this natural disaster,” he added.
The former Head of State urged all Kenyans to step in with as little as possible and help their affected relatives, friends, neighbours and even other citizens who are affected by floods.
On his end, Kenyatta offered KSh2 million to Kenya Red Cross as they conduct search and rescue operations across the country.
“He stated that this contribution is intended to bolster relief efforts and provide essential aid to the affected families, offering them some comfort and solace during these difficult times,” read part of his statement.
Kenyatta further cautioned Kenyans against flouting guidelines offered by government agencies regarding rain situation to avoid certain eventualities.
“He urged citizens to exercise utmost care, avoid crossing flooded roads or pathways, and, most importantly, seek higher ground when necessary to ensure their safety and well-being.”
Acknowledging the biting health crisis, the former President called on volunteer medical officers to step up as medics down their tools.
This in the wake of rising Malaria infections, pneumonia among other illnesses as heavy rains continue wreaking havoc in different parts of the country.
Kenyatta urged government to resolve the crisis through dialogue instead of public spats as has been witnessed in the past few weeks.
“He acknowledges the dedication and commitment of all healthcare workers and emphasizes the importance of addressing their concerns through constructive dialogue and meaningful engagement.”
This comes as the number of flood fatalities surpasses 150 within the past month. On Monday alone, over 70 fatalities were recorded after water submerged a village in Mai Mahiu of Naivasha sub-County.
