Police on Thursday December 5, 2024 reported four incidents of drowning in different parts of the country due to the ongoing heavy rains and flooding.
The drowning incidents occurred at a time when the government revealed that at least 12 individuals have died and thousands displaced due to flooding over the past two weeks.
The first drowning incident occurred in Galole along the Tana River on Wednesday.
According to the police, a decomposing body of a man was discovered in Emmaus village, which had been carried downstream to that location.
The body was identified as Gilbert Buya, who had been missing since December 1. It was found floating near the riverbank and was retrieved for further examination at the mortuary.
In Msambweni, Kwale County, a 14-year-old boy drowned while fishing in the Indian Ocean with friends. Police reported the tragedy took place when strong tides swept him away.
Responders, including police officers and local community members, conducted a search and the body was located along the shore.
It was then transported to the mortuary at Msambweni County referral hospital for a postmortem examination.
Additionally, in the Nambale area of Busia County, the body of a man was recovered from Suo River.
Police examined the scene and found the body of an unidentified adult male, which had decomposed beyond recognition and was lodged along the riverbank.
In another incident, a body was discovered in the Honi River at Kiawara village in Mweiga, Kieni, Nyeri County. Police, assisted by local residents, retrieved the body, that was later identified as Joseph Irungu.
It was subsequently transported to the mortuary at Nyeri County Referral Hospital for an autopsy.
Meanwhile, investigations are underway into two separate murder cases in Rongo, Migori County, and Nyamira County.
In Rongo, the body of 22-year-old Rawlings Ooko was found in his home, showing multiple injuries to the mouth, chest, and abdomen, indicating a suspected homicide.
The body was taken to Homa Bay Referral Hospital mortuary for further examination, and the motive behind the murder remains unclear.
In Nyamira’s Magwagwa area, another body was discovered in Chisaria village. Police confirmed that the victim, 27-year-old Ezra Tochi, was brutally murdered by unknown assailants.
The deceased, who had injuries on the hands and head, has been taken to Ibara Mission Hospital mortuary for an autopsy.
