Gabon’s junta leader, Gen.Nguema declares intention to run for president

Gabon’s military leader, General Brice Oligui Nguema, who seized power in August 2023 following a coup, has officially declared his candidacy for the upcoming April 2025 presidential elections.

Nguema made the announcement on March 1, 2025, stating that he had decided to run after “careful reflection and in response to the many appeals” from the Gabonese people.

“I am a builder, and I need your courage, your strength, to build this country,” he added.

During a meeting with the military, Nguema acknowledged their desire for him to participate in the elections and encouraged them to support his bid at the polls.

From Coup Leader to Presidential Candidate

General Nguema led the military coup that toppled President Ali Bongo Ondimba in August 2023, ending the Bongo family’s 56-year rule. The coup came shortly after Ali Bongo was declared the winner of the disputed presidential election, sparking accusations of electoral fraud.

Following the takeover, Nguema promised a transition to civilian rule, but critics argue that recent constitutional and electoral reforms were designed to pave the way for his presidency.

Opposition Calls for Civilian Leadership

Despite Nguema’s announcement, some opposition parties and civil society groups are urging him to honor his original pledge and allow a civilian government to take over after the transition.

The Bongo family had controlled Gabon since 1967, with Omar Bongo ruling for 41 years until his death in 2009. His son, Ali Bongo, then led the country for 14 years before being ousted.

Ali Bongo’s Plea During the Coup

During the August 2023 coup, Ali Bongo appeared in a video from house arrest, urging Gabonese citizens to “make noise” and resist the military takeover. His plea, however, was largely ignored, as many citizens took to the streets in celebration of the Bongo dynasty’s fall.

As the April 12, 2025, elections approach, all eyes will be on General Nguema’s bid for power and whether Gabon’s transition to democracy will be fulfilled.
