Gachagua accuses government of sponsoring criminal gangs to terrorize Kenyans

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has accused the government of secretly supporting the outlawed Mungiki sect to destabilize Mt Kenya residents.

Speaking at Guardian Angel Tetu Catholic Church in Nyeri County on Sunday January 5, 2025 Gachagua alleged that Deputy President Kithure Kindiki was behind the covert sponsorship of the criminal group, which he described as a threat to peace in the region.

His remarks followed a December 31, 2024 political rally by Maina Njenga, a controversial political leader previously linked to Mungiki.

At the rally, Njenga declared he would take on Gachagua, triggering the latter’s sharp response.

Gachagua accused the police of protecting the sect instead of addressing issues like alcohol abuse in Mt Kenya region.

At the same time, he directed his ally, Mukurweini MP John Kaguchia, to document past crimes committed by the group for submission to the International Criminal Court (ICC), labeling them crimes against humanity.

The former DP further alleged that residents were harassed and robbed after the Maina Njenga rally, although these claims remain unverified.

Gachagua alleged that the criminal gang that in the past has been a thorn in the flesh of the mountain region people, has been reactivated by the government machinery to cause mayhem and chaos.

He is therefore calling for the International Criminal Court to commence investigations immediately and bring to book the perpetrators of the alleged crimes against humanity.
