Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has firmly stated that the opposition does not require the support of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga to win the 2027 General Election.
Speaking during an interview on Weru TV on Sunday, April 27, Gachagua made it clear that Raila is closely aligned with President William Ruto and therefore unlikely to side with the opposition.
Responding to questions about a possible alliance with Raila, Gachagua dismissed the idea, saying the opposition is confident in its current path and leadership.
He emphasized that their strength lies not in personalities but in addressing the struggles of ordinary Kenyans, particularly the approximately 3.5 million people in formal employment who are most affected by high taxes and payroll deductions.
He pledged that if the opposition takes over government, they will ease the burden on salaried workers by scrapping unpopular levies like the Housing Fund.
Instead, he proposed allowing counties to lease out the affordable housing units to repay the public and reduce pressure on taxpayers.
“Honestly speaking, we don’t need him, we’re doing just fine. The majority of Kenyans suffering right now are those earning salaries, and they are the ones we are fighting for,” Gachagua said in Kiswahili during the broadcast.
The former deputy president also mentioned he is working with other prominent leaders such as Kalonzo Musyoka, Eugene Wamalwa, Martha Karua, and Fred Matiang’i, with whom he hopes to form a formidable political force.
Though Matiang’i has not officially declared his bid for the presidency, his name has been floated as a potential contender.
Despite being ousted by Parliament, Gachagua maintains that he still holds significant influence and remains committed to rescuing the country from its current leadership. He reiterated that his impeachment was political and not a rejection by the people.
He is set to launch his own political party in May.
