Gachagua: “Properties cited in my impeachment motion belong to my late brother”

Embattled Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has launched a scathing attack against Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse, the mover of the impeachment motion against him.

According to Gachagua, the lawmaker, in his motion, has blindly cited several properties that belong to his late brother Nderitu Gachagua as his, alleging that he acquired them corruptly in his two-year tenure as the deputy president.

While describing the accusations in the motion as “outrageous and sheer propaganda”, DP Gachagua said that probably MP Mutuse did not know what he was signing up to, because he was only following directives when he tabled the motion of impeachment.

The second in command denied allegations that several properties mentioned in the impeachment motion were obtained through corruption, insisting that majority of them belonged to the estate of his late brother.

“Nderitu Gachagua was the governor of Nyeri and died in London on 24th January 2027, and yours truly Rigathi Gachagua was by his bedside. Three or four weeks before his death, in privacy, he wrote his will and appointed Rigathi Gachagua as an executor of that will, jointly with Mwai Mathenge his close-time buddy who is a quantity surveyor and celebrated lawyer Njoroge Regeru,” Gachagua said.

According to Gachagua, his brother tasked the three of them to manage his estates. “He did put his properties, assets and cash and anything he owned in this world. Among the things he did put was Olive Garden Hotel, Vipingo Beach Resort, Queensgate Apartment, and Lang’ata Highrise Flats. It is these four properties that Mwengi Mutuse alleges that Rigathi Gachagua has acquired them after becoming deputy president in 2022.”

Gachagua sympathised with his late brother’s family for what he says is “suffering public shame” as their properties are splashed in media outlets as proceeds of crime.

He also revealed that in his will, his late brother allocated him some percentage of his estate, and that is the money in his accounts that the impeachment motion is citing as grounds of impeachment.

“I was, therefore, able to get KSh20M from this share. That is money that is in my account, that I am told they are proceeds of crime!” He said.

He added: “Vipingo Beach Resort in Kilifi was Nderitu Gachagua’s holiday home. A beautiful palatial resort on 3.5 acres on the beach. I remember with nostalgia, he used to host us there every Christmas to enjoy ourselves. This property still belongs to the estate of the deceased, because we want to retain it for sentimental values.”

Gachagua also stated that he has the largest dairy farm in Mathira Constituency, courtesy of the Kalenjin community.

“I have a dairy farm with almost 150 cows. I do make an income of almost KSh1.5M per month… I take this opportunity to thank my brothers from the Kalenjin community for that dairy farm. Any time I visit Rift Valley, in appreciation of the support I give President William Ruto, the Kalenjin community always give me a cow or two.”
