Embattled Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Tuesday, October 8 cornered Members of Parliament (MPs) when he took the stage to defend himself against an impeachment motion tabled by Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse.
MPs had spent the better part of Tuesday morning accusing DP Gachagua of sowing seeds of division and segregation by his constant “shareholding” remarks. The lawmakers had argued that his sentiments led to the development of particular areas of the country that voted for President Ruto during the 2022 Presidential Election, and left other opposition strongholds behind.
But when he took the stage, Gachagua clarified that it is not the work of Deputy President to allocate resources, but the National Assembly.
“The Deputy President of Kenya does not allocate resources. Resources for the development of the Republic of Kenya are appropriated by the National Assembly of Kenya,” DP Gachagua asserted.
The second in command told MPs that in his capacity, he can only help the President oversee the implementation of funds allocated and appropriated by the National Assembly. “It is therefore not possible for the Deputy President to deny any part of Kenya resources, because of the way they voted.”
“If your area has no development, please don’t impeach the Deputy President, don’t accuse him of not giving you [MP] resources, you are in the National Assembly to make sure that your area is allocated appropriate resources because that is your job.”
It is a fact that the 2010 Constitution gave Parliament powers in Kenya’s resource allocation politics.
