Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has reached out to Nairobi Governor Sakaja reminding him that Wakulima Market traders voted for him.
In a thread on X, DP Gachagua has called on Governor Sakaja to reconsider his approach on markets situated around the CBD.

In the early hours of Thursday morning, Muthurwa traders stormed roads leading to the CBD protesting moving the market.
The Traders did not agree with the Nairobi County Government moving Muthurwa market to Kangundo Market.

Additionally, Marikiti Market traders joined traders from Muthurwa in protesting, blocking Jogoo Road and Haile Selassie causing a morning traffic standstill.
According to the traders, the decision to relocate the market was made in City Hall without consulting the traders.

DP Gachagua cautions Governor Sakaja
According to DP Gachagua, he and Governor Sakaja had a responsibility to listen to the traders from Muthurwa and Marikiti Markets.
In his responses, Gachagua stated that Wakulima market traders called him to remind him of his promise to them back in 2022.

Gachagua posted on X saying traders “have called me and reminded me of the undertaking you and I jointly gave them in July 2022 as I campaigned for you in Muthurwa.”
Additionally the DP cautioned Governor Sakaja on disregarding the role of public participation stating that it was a constitutional provision.

We promised not to harm businesses
In the second part of Gachagua thread on X, he reminded Governor Sakaja that they promised to not disrupt traders in their 2022 campaigns.
“Kindly, do consider having a sitting with the leadership of the market to agree on whatever changes your Government desires without adversely affecting their livelihoods.” Gachagua suggested.
DP Gachagua also stated that the traders were calling him since he endorsed Governo Sakaja for votes in the 2022 elections.
“They are coming to me as I was your guarantor in matters of trust,” shared Gachagua on his thread on X.
However, the deputy president was keen not to overstep, referring to Governor Sakaja as his brother.
