Dagoretti North Member of Parliament (MP) Beatrice Elachi has called for the Deputy President (DP) position to be returned to the Mt Kenya region, in case Rigathi Gachagua is impeached.
The lawmaker, in an interview with TV47 on Monday, October 14, emphasized the need to respect the region and recognize the origins of the votes that brought the current leadership into power.
“For me, the replacement should go to Central for the purpose of respecting the people of Central and where the vote came from. It’s their seat,” Elachi stated, underscoring the importance of Central Kenya’s representation in the current government leadership.
In the interview, Elachi critiqued the leadership of the country, pointing out that Kenya’s ongoing challenges are deep-rooted in a collective amnesia about its history and past mistakes.
“Our problem as Kenyans is that we quickly forget our own history, where we come from and what we have done. We clean ourselves when we have done wrong; that’s why we are in this mess,” The Azimio-One Kenya Coalition MP remarked.
The MP urged embattled DP Gachagua to engage in self-reflection and accountability. “The Deputy President should look into his bedroom mirror and tell God, ‘I did wrong here. God, I need you this week.’ Everyone does wrong, and he should accept it and seek forgiveness,” Elachi advised.
Furthermore, Elachi claimed that anger issues have significantly contributed to the political challenges facing Gachagua. “Anger is what has brought the Deputy President where he has reached.”
Her comments come at a time when Kenyans from different political divides call for unity and accountability in leadership for the country’s progress.
DP Gachagua is expected to defend himself before the Senate plenary as his impeachment trial kicks off on Wednesday through Thursday this week.
