Namibian President Hage Geingob is facing public criticism after traveling with his four children to the recently concluded COP28 climate summit in Dubai.

Dangos Geingos, Kayla Elago, Nino Kalondo, and Nangula Geingob were part of the delegation, as confirmed by the President’s viral tweet.

The public expressed discontent, questioning the inclusion of the President’s children in the official delegation and accusing him of misusing taxpayers’ money.

One Namibian citizen on social media challenged the President, stating, “You guys really think we are dumb? Why would they be included in the delegates’ list if they aren’t part of it?”

Youth activist and Namibian Member of Parliament Inna Hengari also raised concerns, questioning how the government could claim a lack of funds to sponsor an MP and parliamentary official while funding the President’s four children.

“We anticipate a comprehensive report to be presented in [parliament],” said the 27-year-old politician.

In response, the office of the President released a statement, absolving President Geingob of blame.

The statement clarified that the President and the first lady personally funded their children’s trip from the family’s resources.

“The Namibian public and the media should be assured that not a single cent of public funds has been spent on the first couple’s children,” the statement said.

The presidency countered the allegations, labeling them as “malicious and politically motivated,” aimed at diverting attention from President Geingob’s and the Namibian delegation’s commendable efforts at COP28.

However, some Namibians remain unconvinced by the presidency’s response, asserting that it does not provide sufficient evidence to support the claim that the travel expenses for President Geingob’s children and family members were privately funded.
