Molo member of parliament (MP) Kimani Kuria has disclosed that most Kenyan youth including Gen-Z who are protesting against the Finance Bill 2024 have no idea about the budget making process.
According to the Finance Bill 2024 sponsor and National Assembly Finance and Planning Chairperson Kuria Kimani, Kenyan youth need guidance on the legislative process.
This was after a youth-led nationwide protest against the Finance Bill that put pressure on lawmakers to reject it in its entirety.
Kuria, however, emphasized that members of Generation Z—who are credited with spearheading the protests do not comprehend the legislative process.
“Let us give credit to where Gen Z has taken us. They are raising very pertinent matters but we need to guide them on how that needs to be done in the budget-making and legislative process,” the Molo MP said on Monday during an interview with Citizen TV.
He charged that the youth’s opposition to the Bill was being exploited by the opposition Azimio La Umoja coalition, which holds a minority position in Parliament.
On the other hand, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna had responded to Kuria, informing him that the opposition will reject the bill as a whole rather than suggest any changes to it.
Since last week, two persons have been have been killed as a result of anti-Finance Bill protests in the country.
At the same time, several people including police officers have sustained serious injuries as a result of the protests.
Nevertheless, a seven-day demonstration was launched on Monday in an effort to put further pressure on the MPs and the government to reject the Bill.
