Germany mourns former president Horst Koehler:”Believed in a fairer world”

Horst Koehler, Germany’s former president, passed away on Saturday at the age of 81 after a brief illness.

Surrounded by his family in Berlin, he left behind a legacy of dedication, humility, and a deep commitment to global progress.

Koehler, who served as Germany’s head of state from 2004 to 2010, was not just a leader but a beacon of hope for many, especially in Africa.

Born an economist, Koehler broke the mold as Germany’s first president without a career in politics.

Before taking the highest office, he led the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington, where he gained respect for his sharp mind and compassionate leadership.

His journey from civil service to the presidency was marked by a quiet determination to make the world a fairer place.

President Frank-Walter Steinmeier remembered Koehler as a man who achieved great things for Germany and the world.

“With his death, we have lost a highly esteemed and extremely popular person,” Steinmeier wrote in a heartfelt letter to Koehler’s widow.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz echoed these sentiments, calling Koehler a “committed politician who worked tirelessly for a fairer world.”

Koehler’s presidency was defined by his belief in Germany’s potential.

He often called Germany a “land of ideas,” a nation capable of shaping its future and contributing positively to global challenges.

His speeches inspired millions, urging them to believe in their strength and creativity.

But it was his unwavering focus on Africa that set him apart. Koehler visited the continent numerous times, advocating for its importance in global development.

Sven Behnke, head of Koehler’s office, noted that the former president saw engagement with Africa as not just wise but ethically imperative.

Koehler’s work as a UN envoy to Western Sahara further highligted his commitment to peace and diplomacy.

Though his presidency ended abruptly in 2010 after a controversial remark, Koehler’s impact endured.

He remained a respected figure, admired for his integrity and vision. As Steinmeier aptly put it, Koehler was “a stroke of luck for our country.”

His legacy will continue to inspire generations, both in Germany and beyond
