Gor Mahia in trouble over botched Rooney Onyango Singida move

Kenyan Premier League giants Gor Mahia are at risk of FIFA sanctions for failing to refund $40,000 (approximately KSh 5.7 million) owed to Tanzanian Premier League side Singida.

The amount, paid last year, was for the botched transfer of Rooney Onyango.Singida have now issued a 14-day ultimatum, threatening to report the case to FIFA if Gor Mahia fails to refund the transfer fee.

ow the Dispute Unfolded

Singida claim they followed the correct transfer process when inquiring about Onyango, including:

  • November 12, 2024 – Singida officially expressed interest in Onyango via a transfer letter.
  • November 14, 2024 – Gor Mahia accepted the offer and agreed to the $40,000 transfer fee.
  • Singida paid the amount using the bank details provided by Gor Mahia.
  • However, the transfer never materialized.

In a statement, Singida expressed frustration over Gor Mahia’s failure to issue a refund despite repeated requests.

“On November 14, 2024, you replied to our request, stating your acceptance of our offer and agreeing to a transfer fee of USD 40,000 for the player.

Our club wrote to you on January 3, 2025, requesting a refund, as the transfer did not happen due to your fault.

Unfortunately, we have not received any response or the refund to date.

Your club now has 14 days to settle the outstanding amount.

Failure to comply will force us to refer the matter to FIFA for breach of agreement.”

Gor Mahia’s History with FIFA Disputes

Gor Mahia have previously faced legal battles at the FIFA Disputes Resolution Chamber (DRC) over contractual issues with former players.

The club has suffered transfer bans in the past for failing to meet financial obligations, including unpaid wages and breach of agreements.

Will Singida Take Legal Action?

It remains to be seen whether Singida will follow through on their FIFA threat, but Gor Mahia could face serious consequences if they fail to refund the amount.

The situation is particularly concerning for Gor Mahia fans, as FIFA-imposed sanctions could further strain the club’s finances and limit their ability to sign new players.

Earlier this month, Gor Mahia confirmed that Onyango had agreed to join Singida after an agreement was reached only for the player to make a U-turn days later, leaving the club in a difficult position.

Gor Mahia now have less than two weeks to respond before FIFA potentially intervenes.
