Government announces new half term dates for primary and secondary schools

The Ministry of Education on Wednesday May 29, 2024 announced new dates for term two half-term break.

In a circular to all County Directors of Education, the Ministry of Education noted that the half-term break will run from June 26th to 30th, 2024. The initial dates for the half term were from 20th to 23rd June.

“The change may require adjustments on planned activities and schedules. You are therefore directed to communicate the content of this circular to all Head Teachers and Principals of schools under your jurisdiction,” said Education PS Dr Kipsang, in a circular to all County Directors of Education.

The Ministry mentioned that learners in boarding schools should return on June 30, 2024.

In addition, the Ministry also highlighted that these changes might necessitate modifications to planned activities and schedules in schools across the country.

Schools were supposed to start on April 29, but the Ministry postponed it because of the heavy rains and floods in the country.

Most schools reopened on May, 13, which was a two-week delay. Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu mentioned on May 9 that the second term would be extended for an unspecified period to make up for the lost time.

“Particularly for Form Four candidates, we will see how we can recover time lost by extending the term by a few days. They were expected to close for three weeks in August and we might minimize the number of days schools will be closed,” Machogu said.

The CS made it clear that the national exams dates will stay the same, despite the extension of the second term.
