The government has distanced itself from the ongoing demolitions at Nyama Villa Estate in Kayole, which have left scores of families homeless.
Addressing the matter on Tuesday, Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura firmly denied any State involvement.
Clarifying that the evictions stem from a court order tied to a long-standing land dispute.
Mwaura explained that the demolitions were initiated after residents and the landowner, Muthithi Real Estate Company, failed to settle the issue amicably outside court.
He further noted that while some residents complied with earlier court directives and vacated the property, others did not, leading to the recent enforcement of new orders.
“The government acknowledges the distress and disruption caused by the demolitions at Nyama Villa Estate.
However, it is important to clarify that the government is not involved in the demolitions in any manner,” said Mwaura.
He emphasized that the issue is a legal matter that dates back several years, urging all parties to respect the court’s decision while seeking a peaceful resolution.
“The government respects the independence of the judiciary, the rule of law, and the sanctity of private property.
We urge all those involved to prioritize open dialogue within legal frameworks to resolve any outstanding concerns fairly and peacefully,” he added.
The demolitions, which began earlier this week, have so far flattened over 90 homes, leaving many families stranded and unsure of their next steps.
Tearful residents have pleaded for government intervention, expressing frustration over the lack of solutions and the suddenness of the evictions.
The land in question belongs to Muthithi Real Estate Company.
A private developer who issued eviction notices to residents who refused to comply with payment plans for the disputed property.
While the demolitions have caused significant hardship, Mwaura reassured affected families that the government, through local administration, will explore ways to assist where necessary.
“The government remains committed to supporting those impacted while ensuring that disputes are resolved within the confines of the law,” he stated.
The Nyama Villa demolitions highlight the deep-rooted challenges of land ownership and tenancy agreements.
A recurring issue in Nairobi’s growing urban spaces. For now, affected residents can only hope that ongoing dialogue will offer a glimmer of relief and justice.
