The Kenya Kwanza government has increased bursary allocations for students under the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG -CDF).
This is after President William Ruto signed into law the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (Amendment) Bill on Monday, December 11.
The new law increases the bursary allocation from 35 to 40 percent, to ensure beneficiaries of NG -CDF get higher allocations to facilitate their studies in schools and colleges.
At the same time, MPs are expected to ensure part of the additional funds are channeled towards school feeding programs.

Speaking shortly after the Bill was signed into law, National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah said that the move will boost enrolment to schools and colleges in the country as well as reducing drop-out rates.
“This will check drop-outs, boost enrollment and further the Government’s efforts to increase literacy,” said Ichungw’ah.
Meanwhile, the Act also increases CDF allocation on environmental activities from 2 to 5 percent.

The new CDF law also introduces a 3 percent allocation for constituencies’ digital hubs.
According to the Kenya Kwanza government, the digital hubs are key in enabling the youth acquire skills and boost their employability.
In addition, the President also assented to the National Lottery Bill (National Assembly Bill No. 69 of 2023).
The Act provides a legislative framework for the establishment of a National Lottery Board, which shall be conducted by the National Government.

It also provides a framework for the establishment and administration of the National Lottery Fund.
The Board shall supervise, control and monitor the operations of the National Lottery. It will also be mandated to come up with measures to prevent fraud.
