As the holiday season approaches, the Kenyan government has issued a stern warning to event organisers and entertainment venues regarding the use of private security companies.
Philip Okello, the acting CEO of the Private Security Regulatory Authority (PSRA), delivered a Monday statement emphasizing the need for strict compliance with security regulations.
All event organisers, promoters, planners, and establishments hosting entertainment, recreational, and sporting activities have been directed to ensure that their hired private security companies are fully compliant with the law.
This directive applies to bouncers, event stewards, crowd control personnel, and all other security personnel engaged for the festive season.
Key requirements outlined by PSRA include the necessity for private security companies to possess a valid five-year registration certificate issued by the authority.
Moreover, they must hold event security preparedness certification from PSRA, demonstrating their compliance with essential security and emergency protocols.
Philip Okello underscored the importance of these certifications, stating that they are critical in ensuring that events, festivals, concerts, and entertainment venues meet rigorous security standards. He reiterated.
“No individual or entity should offer private security services for a fee in Kenya without proper vetting, registration, and licensing under the Private Security Regulation Act.”
Non-compliance with these regulations carries significant legal consequences. Offenders face fines and potential imprisonment for hiring or engaging unregistered security personnel.
Okello urged immediate and strict adherence to these guidelines to avoid both personal and corporate liabilities.
In conclusion, as Kenyans prepare to celebrate Christmas and ring in the New Year, the government’s message is clear: safety and security must remain paramount.
Event organisers and venue managers are urged to prioritize compliance with PSRA regulations to ensure a safe and enjoyable festive season for all.
