Government Must Honor Its Promise to Dedan Kimathi’s Family

This past weekend marked 67 years since the execution of freedom fighter Dedan Kimathi by the colonial government and his subsequent burial in an unmarked grave.

67 years of agony and despair for his family which has constantly sort the help of the Kenyan government to retrieve the body for a decent burial.

Yet despite promise after promise by subsequent governments since independence, this desire has remained unfulfilled.

The same promises were repeated by the current leadership of the Kenya Kwanza administration last year during the funeral of Kimathi’s widow, Mukami.

President William Ruto and his Deputy Rigathi Gachagua once again pledged the government’s commitment to ensuring that Kimathi’s family finally finds closure.

Sadly, those promises, to date, remain empty words. As we reflect on Kimathi’s sacrifice and the enduring struggle for Kenya’s independence, it is crucial that we hold our leaders to account on the promises they make.

Promises made by the government must not be hollow echoes of political rhetoric.

Sixty-seven years since Kimathi’s death, his descendants continue to wait in anguish, clinging to the hope that justice will prevail.

The desecration of his memory through bureaucratic indifference is a stain on the conscience of our nation.

The failure to honor Kimathi’s legacy not only betrays the sacrifices of the past but also perpetuates a narrative of neglect and disregard for those who fought valiantly for our freedom.

It is incumbent upon the government to demonstrate unwavering resolve in rectifying this injustice.

The wishes of Kimathi’s late widow, Mukami, must not be consigned to oblivion. Her desire for closure and the restoration of dignity to her husband’s memory must be honored without further delay.
