The government has revealed plans to remove all police roadblocks along Kenyan roads and highways over corruption allegations.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki issued the directive on Thursday, August 24, explaining that all roadblocks should be removed, starting from November 1, 2023.
Kindiki made the remarks during a meeting with the National Assembly’s committee on EAC block and Integration.
The committee had raised concerns that the police roadblocks were inconveniencing transporters and business operators.
Kindiki explained that the order was a confirmation of an earlier directive issued by President William Ruto who stated that the roadblocks were promoting corruption.
The Interior CS added that the government will be using mobile patrols and other surveillance technologies in order to handle security challenges in the country.
“The police roadblocks were less effective since citizens have found ways of circumventing them to evade police officers,” said Kindiki.
He also added that static police roadblocks lead to wasting of time and have also become corruption centers where security officers collect bribes from motorists.
