The Ministry of Lands has issued a notice to residents of six government estates in Eastlands, Nairobi to vacate and allow construction of new houses under the Affordable Housing Program (AHP).
The notice was released on Friday March 1, by Housing Principal Secretary Charles Hinga, directing residents of Jogoo Road Phase I & II, Jamaa, Mbotela, Ahero, and Mawenzi Gardens to vacate.
“As you are aware, the Government is implementing the Affordable Housing Program (AHP), which is part of the Bottom-up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).
“Pursuant to this, several old estates have been identified for redevelopment in order to increase rental stock, avail houses for sale to citizens at affordable rates, and create job opportunities for the youth.
“To pave way for their redevelopment, there is need to vacate all tenants residing in these Government estates immediately,” read part of the notice.

According to the Housing PS, residents in affected houses should vacate by April 30, 2024.
At the same time, the residents were advised to clear all rent arrears, utility bills and service charges before vacating the houses.
Meanwhile, affected residents were informed that they will be given priority in purchasing or renting the new affordable houses upon completion.
The notice came at a time when President William Ruto has expressed his commitment in ensuring implementation of the affordable housing program.

Meanwhile, the main challenge in implementing the housing project has been court cases where the Housing levy was declared unconstitutional.
However, the National Assembly on February 21, 2024 passed the Affordable Housing Bill, 2023, to enable the Kenya Kwanza government to continue with the housing project.
In addition, the Bill has been tabled to the Senate for debate and voting, after which it will be forwarded to the President for enactment into law.
