Government reaffirms commitment to Women’s football as Starlets and U17 team prepare for crucial qualifiers

The Kenyan government has reaffirmed its dedication to supporting women’s football, with Sports Principal Secretary (PS) Eng. Peter K. Tum visiting the Harambee Starlets and the U17 girls’ national team at their residential training camp in Kasarani.

Both teams are preparing for crucial international qualifiers.The Harambee Starlets will face Tunisia in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifiers while U17 girls’ national team is gearing up for the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup qualifiers in Uganda.

PS Tum Commends Players’ Dedication

Addressing the teams, PS Tum praised their resilience and dedication, urging them to play with confidence and unity:

“Your commitment to the sport and your country is truly inspiring. As you step onto the field, know that you carry the hopes of millions of Kenyans. Play with passion, teamwork, and belief.”

He emphasized the government’s investment in grassroots football development, particularly through school games, which serve as a key talent pipeline.

“Our efforts in strengthening school sports have yielded remarkable results. Players like Velma Awuor, Lorna Faith, Quinter Adhiambo, Christine Adhiambo, and Halima Imbachi have risen through this system, proving the effectiveness of our talent development strategy.”

Kenya’s Junior Starlets: A Success Story

Reflecting on recent achievements, PS Tum highlighted Kenya’s historic participation in the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup in the Dominican Republic last year.

“They made history as the first Kenyan team to play at the FIFA U17 World Cup, raising our global profile and paving the way for seamless player transitions to the senior team.”

Notably, Elizabeth Ochaka, captain of the Junior Starlets, has now transitioned to the Harambee Starlets senior team.

Government Pledges Full Support

PS Tum assured the teams of full government backing, pledging continued investment in resources and infrastructure to help them excel internationally.

“We are fully behind you and will continue to support your journey. Kenyans believe in you—go out there and make the nation proud.”
