Governor Barasa calls on National Gov’t to release county funds on time during summit

Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barassa, who is the Chair of Finance Planning and Economic Affairs at the Council of Governors, addressed critical issues during the inaugural National Summit on County Peer Review Mechanism.

He underscored the urgent need for counties to address key infrastructure and service challenges, including road maintenance, water supply, land management, and the provision of bursaries.

Governor Fernandes Barasa graced the inaugural National Summit on County Peer Review Mechanism. He presented a status report on the county’s best practices and areas for improvement. The summit was held at the KICC, Nairobi.

Governor Barassa called on the national government to expedite the release of funds to the counties to prevent delays in these essential services. He highlighted the importance of timely financial support to ensure that county projects and services do not stall.

He also pointed out that agriculture has emerged as the highest-ranked activity within the counties, emphasizing its significance in local economies and the need for continued support and development.

Kakamega, one of the 12 counties reviewed, was identified as a benchmark in agriculture, vocational training, youth development, health, county law enforcement, public participation, ECDE centers, and road infrastructure.

Echoing these sentiments, Kisii County Governor expressed concern over land issues, particularly those affecting county headquarters, and urged the national government to address these challenges promptly.

The summit highlighted the critical need for collaboration between the national and county governments to ensure the efficient delivery of services and the sustainable development of county regions.
