Governor Barasa condemns assault on headteacher in Isongo

Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa and teachers’ unions have condemned the residents who assaulted the head teacher of St Gabriel Isongo Secondary School in Mumias East constituency.

Speaking during a service at Believers Revival Mission Church in Butsotso East Ward, Lurambi constituency, on Sunday, Barasa emphasized the need for collaboration among parents, teachers, the Board of Management (BOM), and students to achieve good results in exams.

Last Wednesday, residents attacked and chased St Gabriel Isongo Secondary School head teacher David Wafula and the director of studies after the school recorded poor results in the 2023 KCSE exams.

Out of 179 registered candidates, only two scored C+ and above, while 173 students scored D- minus, and four scored grade E.

Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) Kakamega branch Secretary-General Harrison Otota now wants security personnel to investigate the matter and look into local politicians who incited the locals to attack the Headteacher.

“We urge the police officers to arrest those people who assaulted and chased away the school principal and teachers, as well as the local politicians who encouraged the community to behave disorderly,” said Otota.

“Let the aggrieved parties use the laid-down procedures in solving issues affecting school performance rather than embarrassing and harassing teachers,” he added.

Kenya School Secondary School Heads Association (Kessha) Kakamega Branch Chairman Michael Amukowa also condemned such incidents, asking the police to arrest the goons and hold them responsible for attacking the headteacher.

Locals blamed the Teacher Service Commission for the poor results, claiming that they have been posting and transferring teachers on short notice in the school, making it difficult for them to bond with the students.

“This school keeps changing teachers, every four months, students receive new teachers,” stated a local.
