Governor Johnson Sakaja shares his plans for Nairobi

Nairobi County governor Johnson Sakaja has outlined some of his plans to transform Kenya’s capital city.

Speaking on Wednesday February 5, 2025 during an interview at Radio 47 with Mwakideu and Mwashumbe, Governor Johnson Sakaja discussed his plans for Nairobi’s development.

Sakaja disclosed that he aims to transform the city into one of order, dignity, hope, and opportunity, focusing on issues like traffic, water supply, drainage, slum upgrading, and better education and healthcare.

Revenue Collection
“Nairobi collected 12.8 billion shillings in revenue last year, the highest since devolution began,” Sakaja stated.

According to the Nairobi governor, the money will fund operations, vehicle servicing, and projects like stadium construction.

Water Supply
Sakaja addressed Nairobi’s water shortage, with a deficit of 400 million liters per day.

He mentioned plans like the Northern Collector project, which will add 220 million liters of water to the city’s supply.

Drainage and Flooding
The governor discussed Nairobi’s drainage issues, which stem from capacity limits, not blockages.

He outlined plans to build a trunk sewer along the Nairobi River to ease flooding.

Slum Upgrading
Sakaja emphasized the need to upgrade slums, highlighting a housing project in Kibera.

The county is collaborating with the national government on the Nairobi River regeneration project to improve informal settlements.

Education and Healthcare
Sakaja also plans to improve education and healthcare by offering free meals to school children and building new social halls for community use.

Future Vision
Sakaja concluded by sharing his vision of a clean, well-planned Nairobi with better water, drainage, and transport as these ongoing projects will help shape the city’s future.
