Governor Jonathan Bii Chelilim of Uasin Gishu has taken a firm stand in defence of Eldoret, following recent media reports labelling the city as a hub for scammers.
The governor expressed concern over these portrayals, particularly on local media highlighting allegations of students being defrauded while seeking job and study opportunities abroad.
Governor Chelilim emphasized that these incidents while concerning, do not represent the true spirit of Eldoret.
He described the city as a vibrant, progressive, and cosmopolitan hub that welcomes people from all walks of life.
“Eldoret is not a scammer hub,” he declared. “It is a city of growth, opportunity, and innovation, and we are proud of what we stand for.”
In response to the recent reports, Governor Chelilim announced immediate action to address the fraudulent activities that have tarnished Eldoret’s reputation.
He pledged that his administration, in collaboration with relevant authorities, will launch a rigorous crackdown on these operations.
“We will revoke the operating licenses of any agency found to be violating regulations within our county,”
He asserted, sending a clear message that such behaviour will not be tolerated.
The governor also called on the National Employment Authority and the Ministry of Labour to implement stricter vetting processes.
Before approving any applications related to employment and education opportunities.
“There must be accountability at all levels to protect our citizens and uphold the integrity of our city,” he said,
highlighting the importance of safeguarding the people of Uasin Gishu from exploitation.
He expressed deep empathy for the parents and students who have fallen victim to these scams, acknowledging their pain and frustration.

He urged all residents to exercise caution and conduct thorough research.
Before committing to any opportunities that could turn out to be fraudulent.
Governor Chelilim reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to ensuring that Eldoret thrives as a welcoming and prosperous city.
“Eldoret deserves to be recognized for its achievements, not undermined by unscrupulous individuals.
We will work tirelessly to restore and maintain the city’s good name,” he vowed.
Through decisive action and a strong message of resilience, Governor Chelilim is determined to protect the integrity of Eldoret and its hardworking citizens.
